“Sang-jun, Mother is critically ill.”
It was a Sunday evening in July 2024 when a phone call came from his older brother. In just two days, Deacon Jeon was scheduled to depart with the Medical NGO MediAccess BEE Team on an outreach to Sumba Island, Indonesia. At first he nearly stayed behind, but one conviction turned him around: “My mother will live only if I go.” He left in the end, and she lived on for another year before passing away.
On Sumba Island, Deacon Jeon encountered Jesus twice — once in the tears of a five-year-old girl with a middle ear infection who came alone without a guardian, and again in the weary gaze of a woman in her forties who could not stop working despite an infected foot. “In that moment, what had been a mere livelihood — the work of a doctor — came to me for the first time as a calling.”
Ranging from age 7 to their 60s, gathered from the US, China, and Korea with nothing but a shared sense of calling, the BEE Team was a spiritual community where a single glance was enough for understanding. This year, he sets out on that road again — this time with his wife, his daughter, and a close friend’s daughter.
“Just as Jesus lived his life on the road, I simply set out on this path — following the Jesus who calls me to that very road.”
